The movie, Hell in the Pacific is a World War II drama that focuses on the interactions between a downed United States Marine Corps pilot and a lone Imperial Japanese Navy officer on a remote island in the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean.  Once the Japanese officer discovers the American pilot, he begins to stalk him as an enemy soldier who must be killed or captured.  Early on in the movie, the Japanese officer captures the American, but this situation is quickly reversed when he manages to wriggle free.  As time goes on, the two enemies finally decide to live and let live, each moving to their own separate portion of the island.  Eventually the two adversaries come to rely upon one another to survive setting-up living quarters in a deserted Japanese camp, getting drunk together and almost becoming friends.  The ending of this movie, in its current form, is greatly at odds with the director’s original vision which included the Japanese officer killing two fellow Japanese soldiers who happen across the American pilot and decapitate him.  “As it now stands, viewers are left with an explosive “lady of the tiger” denouement”.  While “Hell in the Pacific” is set against the backdrop of a beautiful island in the Pacific Ocean, the real interesting part of the film is that the entire cast consists of only the two central characters.  The acting performances of the these two high-powered international stars make this movie well worth watching.  Starring Lee Marvin and Toshiro Mifune.  Widescreen in color.  Released in 1968.  Runtime 103 minutes.
