The book, History Of The United States Army chronicles the development and operational history of the United States Army from the early colonial militias in the mid 18th century up through the modern United States Army in the post Vietnam era of the 20th century.  Along the way the United States Army has expanded in time of war and has repeatedly been downsized at the completion of hostilities.  In most conflicts, the United States Army has fielded the most trained and best-equipped soldiers.  In addition, as needs have changed along with the underlying equipment technology, so to have the actual fighting forces that is part of the United States Army.  Examples of these force changes include the establishment of airborne paratroopers and rangers used extensively in World War II and in subsequent conflicts.  Another example is the formal establishment in the early 1950s of the "Green Berets", which are a very elite group of "special forces" who undertake clandestine missions similar in scope to the United States Navy S.E.A.L. Teams.  The "Green Berets" are task primarily to perform the following seven missions: 1) Foreign internal defense; 2) Special reconnaissance; 3) Direct action; 4) Counter-terrorism; 5) Counter-proliferation; 6) Psychological operations and 7) Information operations.  While the time and place of wars have varied, the United States Army has enjoyed an over 200-year history of excellence in the defense of the United States and all it stands for.  "History Of The United States Army" includes twelve chapters and an index as follows: 1) The Birth Of An Army; 2) The American Revolution; 3) The Years Of Growth And Consolidation; 4) The Indian And Mexican Wars; 5) The Civil War; 6) The Spanish-American War; 7) Expansion Into Empire; 8) The Great War; 9) World War Two; 10) Korea; 11) From Vietnam To The Present Day; 12) The Army Today and 13 Index.  In addition to an informative narrative, "History Of The United States Army" includes the following features: 1) Approximately 167 black and white photographs; 2) About 19 color photographs; 3) a black and white illustration; 4) 4 color illustrations and 5) 1 map.  "History Of The United States Army" is sure to appeal to any "armchair general" or military enthusiast.  This book is 158 pages, is in very good condition but does not have a dust cover.  No author identified.  Edition published in 1988.
