The book, Indy 500: More Than A Race tells the fascinating story of the Indianapolis 500, which is the fastest, richest race in the world.  Held each year on Memorial Day weekend, the Indy 500 pits 33 drivers racing cars at more than 200 mph in order to win the checkered flag and a purse of more than $4,000,000.   The Indy 500 is a race that is attended by a crowd of as much as 400,000 fans at the world famous speedway also known as the "brickyard".   More than just a race, however, the Indy 500 is an event where there's action on all sides with private jets jamming the local airports and highway traffic jams that can back-up for miles.  In addition to the race, there are parades, parties and qualification trials that ensure an entire weekend of festivities.  Beyond chronicling the event, the author who has been the "official" racetrack announcer for 40 years, delves into what goes into making the Indy 500, from getting a racecar and financing a dream to creating a new track record.  Behind the scenes he watches and relates the spring trials, gauges the mood in "Gasoline Alley" and calls out the challengers for the coveted pole position and follows wheel-to-wheel finishes, final lap passes, horrible wrecks and the jubilation in Victory Circle.  The author also knows all the participants including the marquee names of Andretti, Foyt, Fittipaldi, Mears, Sullivan and the Unsers, as well as, the lesser known race drivers whose teams are stricty low-budget affairs.  Overall, "Indy 500: More Than A Race" tells the colorful story of Indy-style races, drivers, cars and traditions.  It represents an inside look at what has become one of the most famous annual car races in the world.  The major sections of "Indy 500: More Than A Race" are as follows: 1) Foreword; 2) A City Celebrates; 3) Racing's First Family; 4) The Most Exciting Races; 5) Superteams; 6) It's A New Track Record; 7) Financing The Dream; 8) Speed; 9) Champions; 10) Emphasis Safety; 11) Seventy-Fifth Birthday; 12) Authors and Photographers; 13) Glossary; 14) Credits and 15) Index.  In addition to an informative narrative, "Indy 500: More Than A Race" includes the following features: 1) Approximately 55 black and white photographs; 2) About 395 color photographs; 3) 14 black and white illustrations and 4) 1 three-dimensional Marlboro/Patrick March 86 C black and white race car illustration.  This book is 288 pages and is in excellent condition.  The author is Tom Carnegie with Patrick Bedard (foreword) and Ted West (photograph captions).  Edition published in 1987.
