The book, Jimmy Doolittle: Daredevil Aviator And Scientist tells the incredibly true story of the General James H. (“Jimmy”) Doolittle’s life as an American aviation trailblazer from his days of daredevil stunt flying and racing to the historic raid over Tokyo in 1942, which one him the Congressional Medal Of Honor.  Doolittle’s legendary career paralleled the growth of aviation in the United States.  Having been born just seven years before the Wright Brothers made their famous first flight at Kitty Hawk North Carolina, Jimmy Doolittle won his wings in 1917 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Signal Corps Reserve.  In 1922, he made a record-setting flight across the continental United States.  This record flight was followed up by course work at M.I.T. where he received one of the first doctoral degrees in aeronautical engineering.  Then it was back to speed and stunt flying where he won the coveted Schneider Trophy cup with a record setting flight only to later decide that air racing as a spectacle had outlived its usefulness.  Jimmy Doolittle was back in uniform as a colonel early in World War II where he commanded the famous Tokyo Raiders on their April 18, 1942 mission to bomb select Japanese targets in their “Home Islands”.  General Doolittle subsequently went on to be first the commander in chief of the Air Forces in North Africa followed by a stint as commander of the mighty Eight Air Force during the Normandy invasion.  After the war, General Jimmy Doolittle became a civilian again, joining Shell Oil in an important post.  Among the many firsts in the storied aviation career of Jimmy Doolittle are the following: 1) Harmon Trophy winner in 1930 for his experiments in “blind” flying; 2) Breaking the world speed record in 1932; 3) Election as president of the Aeronautical Sciences; 4) First American to fly over the Andes and 5) Winner of the Bendix Trophy.  The major sections of “Jimmy Doolittle: Daredevil Aviator And Scientist” are as follows: 1) Chapter 1 – “Nome Town Boy Makes Good!”; 2) Chapter 2 – A Fighter Is Born; 3) Chapter 3 – A Lesson In Sportsmanship; 4) Chapter 4 – The Course Is Set; 5) Chapter 5 – More Confidence Than Skill; 6) Chapter 6 – Coast-To-Coast In Less Than A Day; 7) Chapter 7 – The Crazy Yankee; 8) Chapter 8 – The End of Seat-Of-Your-Pants Flying; 9) Chapter 9 – Twice A Caterpillar; 10) Chapter 10 – Never Another Pylon; 11) Chapter 11 – Back In Uniform; 12) Chapter 12 – “I Don’t Deserve The Big Medal!”; 13) Chapter 13 – North Africa To The Pacific; 14) Chapter 14 – “A Pattern Of Purpose And Consistence” and 15) Index.  In addition to an informative narrative, “Jimmy Doolittle: Daredevil Aviator And Scientist” includes approximately 28 black and white photographs.  “Jimmy Doolittle: Daredevil Aviator And Scientist” is sure to appeal to anyone who likes stories of brave men and inside accounts the aircraft they flew.  This book is 183 pages, is signed by the author and is in good condition.  The author is Carroll V. Glines.  Edition published in 1974.
