The Ju 87 was an angular aircraft that owed its existence to German World War I fighter ace Ernst Udet who as head of the Reich's Air Transport Ministry witnessed the power of dive bombing in demonstrations held in the United States and as a result pushed for their development for use by the German Luftwaffe.  After much development, the Ju-87 A dive bomber was delivered in 1937 for use flight testing by the Luftwaffe during the Spainish Civil War.  The lessons learned in Spain lead to the development of the B (Berta) variant which had a larger more powerful engine and the R (Richard) variant which had two wing mounted external fuel tanks which almost doubled the Ju-87's range.  The Ju-87 was most effective when the Luftwaffe enjoyed local air supreamacy which was not the case during the Battle of Britain where many aircraft were shot down.  The Ju-87 went on to enjoy modest sucess in North Africa, Italy and Russia.  The Ju-87 B /R had the following operational characteristics: 1) Top speed of 238 m.p.h. and 2) Combat range of between 490 and 888 miles.  The Ju-87 carried two fixed and one flexible 7.9 mm MG 15 machines guns and could carry either a 1,102 pound, one 551 pound and four 110 pound bombs or one 551 pound bomb and two external 66 imperial gallon drop tanks.  This older, out-of-production Ju-87 B / R model is molded in tan plastic and includes the following features: 1) Authentic markings for a Junkers Ju-87 B / R operated by the Luftwaffe during World War II; 2) Clear plastic canopy; 3) Detailed engine; 4) Detailed landing gear; 5) Two bombs; 6) Recessed panel lines; 7) Painting guide and 8) Illustrated assembly instructions.  The box is in very good condition.  Never started and 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions inventoried.
