The Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien (Allied code name Tony) was a single seat, single engine Japanese World War II fighter aircraft used by the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force between 1943 and 1945.  The Ki-61 was also the only mass-produced World War II era Japanese fighter to utilize a liquid-cooled inline engine.  By the time production had ceased in 1945, approximately 3,200 Ki-61s of all variants had been produced.  The operational characteristics of the Ki-61 are as follows: 1) Top speed of about 360 m.p.h.; 2) Combat range of just over 350 miles and 3) Service ceiling of 38,000 feet.  The Ki-61's armament consisted of two 20 mm cannon and two 12.7 mm machine guns.  It could also carry two 550-pound bombs on short-range missions.  The Kawasaki Ki-61-II Tony, which is the subject of this model, was designed specifically to operate as a high altitude interceptor capable of successfully engaging the American B-29 Superfortress bombers during their attacks on the Japanese Home Islands.  This Tony Kawasaki Ki-61-II Kai "Fast Back" Tony scaled model includes the following features: 1) Authentic markings for either a Ki-61-II Kai (Tony) aircraft flown by the Imperial Japanese Army Air Evaluation Department, Fussa Air Base, Mainland Japan or as flown by the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force, 56th Air Regiment during World War II; 2) Clear plastic canopy and landing light lens; 3) Detailed cockpit; 4) Detailed landing gear; 5) Molded in light gray colored plastic; 6) Recessed panel line detail; 7) Separately molded fuel drop tanks and bombs; 8) Spinning propeller; 9) Painting guide and 10) Illustrated assembly instructions.  The box is in new condition.  Never started and 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions inventoried.
