The book, L-Birds: American Combat Liaison Aircraft Of World War II takes a look at the frequently overlooked story of World War II liaison aircraft known to many as "L-Birds".  "L-Birds: American Combat Liaison Aircraft Of World War II' provides a historical background explaining the multiple roles these aircraft were used for along with technical specifications for the most important models including the Stinson L-1 & L-5, the Taylorcraft L-2 Grasshopper, the Aeronca L-3 and the Piper L-4.  Coverage continues on the various "L" models up through the L-12.  Collectively these light, off-the-shelf single engine aircraft were used for the following roles: 1) Artillery spotting; 2) Air ambulance; 3) Forward air control; 4) Message delivery service and 5) Personnel transportation duties.  In addition to documenting individual L-Bird types, "L-Birds: American Combat Liaison Aircraft Of World War II" examines their use flying from naval vessels, as well as, individual unit histories.  While these aircraft were only covered in cloth and thus were vulnerable to enemy ground fire, the Axis forces soon learned not to shoot at the "L-Birds" as it would inevitably end in their positions being shelled by Allied artillery.  In addition to an informative narrative, "L-Birds: American Combat Liaison Aircraft Of World War II" includes the following features: 1) Approximately 145 black and white vintage photographs and 2) About 10 color profiles.  This book is 96 pages and is in new condition.  The author is Terry M. Love.  Edition published in 2001.
