The book, LaGG Fighters In Action (# 163) represents a pictorial review of the LaGG 3 series of single engine monoplane fighters produced from 1941 to 1942 in the Soviet Union.  The LaGG-3 was developed under emergency conditions by the Soviets in order to replace the obsolete Polikarpov I-16 and I-153 fighters that were considered obsolete by 1940.  While the LaGG-3 series of fighters were only produced for two years, they had the distinction of having fought in every major World War II campaign from the Caucasus in the South to the Baltic Sea in the North.  Many Soviet aces claimed their first kills while flying the LaGG-3 series of fighters.  The design and production of the LaGG-3 is even more remarkable when one considers the fact that besides Semyon Alekseevich Lavochkin, the two other founding members of the design bureau Gorbunov and Gudkov had never designed an aircraft before.  Just as the LaGG-3 series of fighters supplanted the outdated I-16 and I153 earlier in World War II, by the end of 1943 they too were outclassed by the more advanced Yakovlev fighter series.  One thing is certain, however, had the LaGG-3 series of modern fighter aircraft not been available during the dark days of the German invasion of the Soviet Union, the outcome of World War II in the East might have been substantially different.  The major sections of "LaGG Fighters In Action (# 163)" are as follows: 1) Acknowledgements; 2) Introduction; 3) I-22 Prototype; 4) I-301 Prototype; 5) LaGG-3 (1st Series); 6) LaGG-3 (4th Series); 7) LaGG-3 (8th Series); 8) Japanese LaGG-3; 9) LaGG-3 (11th Series); 10) LaGG-3 (23rd Series); 11) LaGG-3 (29th Series); 12) LaGG-3 (33rd Series); 13) LaGG-3 (34th Series) - Anti-tank Variant; 14) LaGG-3 (35th Series); 15) Finnish LaGG-3 (35th Series) and 16) LaGG-3 (66th Series).  In addition to an informative narrative, "LaGG Fighters In Action (# 163)" includes the following features: 1) Approximately 83 black and white vintage photographs; 2) About 30 black and white illustrations; 3) 10 color side aircraft profile illustrations; 4) 1 three-view LaGG-3 (1st Series) black and white illustration with specifications; 5) 1 three-view LaGG-3 (35th Series) black and white illustration with specifications and 6) 3 color cover paintings.  This book is 50 pages and is in very good condition.  The author is Hans-Heiri Stapfer with Don Greer & Ernesto Cumpian (colorists) and Joe Sewell (illustrations).  Edition published in 1996.
