The Nova documentary film, Last Flight Of Bomber 31, tells the fatefull story of a Navy PV-1 Bomber that departed from an icy runway high above the Artic Circle in March, 1945 on a dangerous mission to bomb a Japanese installation in one of their most northern islands. After the bombers departure with seven Navy crewman, it was never heard from again. For decades what happened to this bomber and its crew remain a mystery. In 1999, American officials received photographs taken on Russia's remote Kamchatka Penninsula that revealed the remains of an American bomber fitting the description of a Navy PV-1 Bomber. In this Nova generated documentary for public television ,the viewer will discover the mystery and heroism behind one of World War II's most puzzling disappearances and miraculous discoveries. Find out through a recreation what the last minutes on-board the doomed bomber most have been like and hear from an expert who wonders if any of the crew could have survived. Hear Navy pilots' candid recollections about their covert and dangerous sub-zero bombing missions. Finally follow investigators including forensic archaeologists as they travel to the remote crash site. In the end this film brings all of the pieces together regarding this uncommon story of courage and tragedy.
