With the development of the turbojet engine, aviation was on the threshold of a new era in aviation.  Unlike the pure jet engines of the 1950s that were more costly to operate, the turbojet engine offered enhanced performance with lower fuel consumption.  The Lockheed four-engine L-188 Turboprop Electra first flew on December 6, 1957 and began regular airline service with Eastern Airlines on January 12, 1959.  While the Lockheed L-188’s history was marred by three accidents, it went on to become and safe and reliable airliner especially on short routes where it nearly equaled the performance of jet airliners but at a substantially lower operating cost.  By the time production of the L- 188 commercial airliner came to an end, 170 had been manufactured.  Even today, the Lockheed Electra can be seen in use with several freight and cargo companies.  The Lockheed Electra also formed the basis of the highly successful P-3 Orion maritime reconnaissance bomber utilized so successfully by the United States Navy and armed forces of many other countries throughout the world during the height of the “Cold War”.  The Electra is powered by four Allison 501D engines developing 3,750 hp each and can carry up to 100 passengers at a top speed of 448 m.p.h. over a range of up to 2,770 miles.  This Lockheed L-188 Turboprop Electra scaled model includes the following features: 1) Authentic markings for both Eastern and KLM Royal Dutch airlines; 2) Clear plastic one piece cockpit windshield; 3) Molded in light gray colored plastic; 4) Recessed panel lines; 5) Painting guide and 6) Illustrated assembly instructions.  The box is in new condition.  Never started and 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions.
