The book, Luftwaffe At War: Airwar Over The Atlantic is part of an illustrated series of publications that presents every aspect of the German Air Force in World War II, on all fronts and in widely varying conditions. Contemporary photographs from archives and private collections, many published for the first time, reveal how and where the many different types of German aircraft operated. Detailed photograph captions written by experts in military aviation provide further clarity regarding the subject material. "Luftwaffe At War: Airwar Over The Atlantic" examines the German Luftwaffe’s role in patrolling the waters of the Baltic Sea, North Sea, and Atlantic Ocean during the course of World War II. While various aircraft of the German Luftwaffe including the Focke-Wulf Fw 200, Heinkel He-111 and Junkers Ju 88 initially performed the primary rolled of reconnaissance early in the war, by 1940 they were increasingly used offensively to attack “Allied” shipping, particularly the convoys sailing to ports in Great Britain and to the arctic port of Murmansk in the U.S.S.R. In the offensive role, the Luftwaffe performed the following missions: 1) Dropping depth charges; 2) Planting mines in shipping lanes and 3) Attacking surface vessels with various size bombs. Towards the latter part of World War II, the Luftwaffe’s role of maritime patrol became increasingly difficult due to the loss of airbases in France and the overwhelming Allied Fighter strength. Also, while the Luftwaffe did work loosely with the German Navy to coordinate attacks on Allied shipping, the infighting between the two branches of service help to reduce the effectiveness of resources during the “Battle of the Atlantic”. "Luftwaffe At War: Airwar Over The Atlantic" contains four pages of introductory text that summarizes the role played by Luftwaffe maritime patrol aircraft during World War II. In addition to these four pages of introductory text and authoritative picture captions, " Luftwaffe At War: Airwar Over The Atlantic " includes the following features: 1) Approximately 113 black and white photographs and 2) About 8 rare wartime color photographs. This book is 72 pages and is in excellent condition. The author is Manfred Griehl. Edition published in 2003.
