The Macchi Castoldi MC 72 was an experimental single wing seaplane designed and manufactured by the Italian company Macchi Aeronautica. A modified FIAT AS-6 V-24 engine that ran double, contra-rotating propellers powered the MC 72. The MC 72 was unique in that it was made from a mix of materials. From the engine back through the cockpit the MC 72 was constructed out of metal with the last section of the fuselage being built out of wood. The wing and floats were built out of metal and contained a series of radiators built into these structures for cooling engine oil and water. While the MC 72 was developed to compete in the Schneider Trophy races, early engine trouble prevented it from doing so. Work continued, however, and after a series of flights and additional refinements, a MC 72 flown by Italian Warrant Officer Francesco Agello set a new world speed record over water on April 10, 1933 of 424 mph. Further improvements allowed a MC 72, also piloted by Warrant Officer Francesco Agello, to reach an average speed of 440 mph over water on October 23, 1934. To this day, this average speed of 440 mph remains the fastest speed ever attained by a piston-engine seaplane. A single example of the Macchi Castoldi MC 72 exists today and is on display at the Italian Air Force Museum outside of Rome Italy. This out-of-production Macchi Castoldi MC 72 scaled model represents a rare early Italian issue from Delta and includes the following features: 1) Clear plastic windscreen; 2) Detailed cockpit; 3) Detailed contra-rotating propellers; 4) Detailed floats; 5) Recessed panel lines; 6) Three-view color painting guide and 7) Illustrated assembly instructions. The box is in excellent condition.  Never started and factory sealed.
