The book, Macdonald Illustrated War Studies: Carrier Fighters describes the development of naval fighter aircraft up to the outbreak of World War II and the evolution of tactics and pilot training that occurred as a result of their early wartime experience.  A number of significant naval-air battles are reviewed at length as these highlight the lessons learned by the Americans and British early on in World War II.  Among the battles reviewed are the Malta Convoys of 1941 & 1942, the Coral Sea, Midway and the Philippine Sea, which represented the greatest air battle of the entire war.  The development of a night-fighter force and the measures taken to combat the deadly Kamikaze suicide attacks are also reviewed.  Interestingly enough, carrier fighters scored the first and last Allied air victories of World War II, the first defending the British Fleet in the North Sea and the last taking the war to Imperial Japanese Empire in the skies over Tokyo Bay.  In between were battles fought and lessons learned, which when combined with the shear American industrial production meant that in the final year of the war, the Allied Fleet could deploy at will over 1,000 of the best fighters in the world in support of a single campaign.  The major sections of "Macdonald Illustrated War Studies: Carrier Fighters" are as follows: 1) Introduction (Fleet Defense); 2) Aircraft And Armament (Armament); 3) Training; 4) Defensive (Norway, Mediterranean Convoys - 1941, The Pacific - 1941-42, Malta Convoys - Summer 1942 & The Pacific 1942-43 - Marking Time); 5) Development and Doctrine (The New Fighters & Night Fighters); 6) Offensive (The Fast Carriers - 1943-44 & The Big Blue Blanket - 1944-45); 7) Appendix 1 - Fleet Fighters 1937-45 and 8) Appendix 2 - The Opposition.  In addition to an informative narrative, "Macdonald Illustrated War Studies: Carrier Fighters" includes the following features: 1) Approximately 150 black and white vintage photographs; 2) About 19 black and white illustrations; 3) 5 color illustrations; 4) 5 maps and 5) 15 black and white aircraft profile illustrations including some with aircraft specifications.  "Macdonald Illustrated War Studies: Carrier Fighters" is sure to appeal to the general reader and military expert alike.  This book is 160 pages and is in excellent condition.  The author is David Brown.  Edition published in 1975.
