The Martin MB-2 twin-engine bomber represented a modernized version of the original Martin MB-1 produced in 1918 towards the end of World War I.  While the Martin MB-2 never saw active combat, it flew its most famous missions in July 1921 as part of a six-bomber force lead by Brig. General Billy Mitchell.  During two demonstration missions, Brig. General Billy Mitchell lead his small bomber force 100 miles out to sea to attack the German World War I era 27,000 ton unsinkable dreadnought "Ostfriesland" in the ultimate display of air power up to that point.  Brig. General Billy Mitchell's initial attack resulted in sufficient damage that had the ship been underway, it would have been brought to a halt.  The next day, Brig. General Billy Mitchell once again lead a small contingent of MB-2 bombers out to sea to attack the German battleship and within 25 minutes, it slipped beneath the waves of the Atlantic Ocean.  These demonstration missions redefined the use of airpower against naval ships and indirectly lead to the later realization during World War II that the battleship had been forever supplanted by the aircraft carrier as the world's greatest capital ships.  The Martin MB-2 continued in active United States Army Air Corps service until replaced by newer types in 1928.  This Martin MB-2 Bomber scaled model includes the following features: 1) Authentic United States Army Air Corps markings including optional decals for a 96th Bombing Squadron aircraft flown by Brig. General Billy Mitchell during his famous July, 1921 demonstration flight; 2) Clear plastic windscreen; 3) Detailed engines; 4) Molded in olive colored plastic; 5) Simulated fabric covering; 6) Two crew figures and 7) Illustrated assembly instructions.  The box is in very good condition.  Never started and 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions inventoried.
