The Mitsubishi Ki-21, (Allied code name Sally) was a Japanese twin engine medium / heavy bomber used in the late 1930s up through the end of World War II by the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force. The Ki-21 Sally was introduced in 1938 and by the time it was retired at the end of World War II, almost 2,100 units of all variants had been produced. The Ki-21 Sally typically carried a crew of up to 7 airmen and had the following operational characteristics: 1) Top speed of 300 m.p.h.; 2) Combat range approaching 1,700 miles and 3) Service ceiling of just under 33,000 feet. The Ki-21 Sally carried five 7.7 mm flexible machine guns and one 12.7 mm fixed machine gun as defensive armament, as well as, had an offensive capability of carrying up to 2,200 lbs. of bombs. The Ki-21-11 variant, which is the subject of this model, was built in limited numbers to evaluate the aircraft's performance with more powerful engines as a heavy bomber.
