The highly respected and referenced Monogram Close-Up series concentrates on German and Japanese aircraft of World War II.  Each title includes a well-researched development and operational history along with a technical description.  All variants are thoroughly reviewed and are well illustrated along with a general view, close-up black and white photographs and line drawings.  Later volumes also have a center spread of color photos.  The book, Monogram Close-up 13: Aichi M6A1 Seiran - Japan's Submarine Launched Panama Canal Bomber" represents a pictorial study of the Aichi M6A1 Seiran ("Mountain Haze"), which was a Japanese, purpose built submarine-launched attack floatplane designed to operate off the large Japanese I-400 class submarines during World War II.  The M6A Seiran made its first flight in 1943 but production ceased in 1945 after only 28 aircraft of all variants had been manufactured.  The M6A1 Seiran special attack bomber was produce in the greatest quantity with approximately 18 being manufactured.  While the concept of a submarine launched aircraft was not new within the Japanese Imperial Navy, the thought carrying multiple submarine launch aircraft per submarine took the concept to the next level.  The I-400 class submarine of which only 2 were completed was designed to carry three M6A1 Seirans.  While the original vision called for multiple I-400 class and M6A1 Seiran equipped submarines to attack the Panama Canal the realities of the war in 1945 dictated that a mission be launched on the American naval forces building up at Ulithi Atoll in late July 1945.  While proceeding on this mission, the flagship I-401 received a radio transmission from headquarters announcing the surrender of all Japanese forces to the United States of America.  As the I-400 and I-401 sailed back to their base in Japan, all M6A1 Seirans were jettisoned off the submarines as a final sign of resistance.  The M6A1 Seiran carried a crew of two and had the following operational characteristics: 1) Top speed of just under 300 mph; 2) Range of just over 700 miles and 3) Service ceiling of about 32,500 feet.  The M6A1 Seiran carried one light cabin mounted machinegun and either one torpedo or about a 1,900 bomb load.  The major sections of "Monogram Close-up 13: Aichi M6A1 Seiran - Japan's Submarine Launched Panama Canal Bomber" are as follows: 1) Introduction; 2) Development Of Seiran; 3) Production; 4) Nanzan; 5) Engine; 6) Seiran's Submersible Carriers; 7) The Seiran Corps; 8) Operational Training; 9) Planned Panama Canal Attack; 10) Operation "Hikari"; 11) Conclusion; 12) The Controversial M6A1 Designation and 13) Camouflage And Markings.  In addition to an informative narrative, "Monogram Close-up 13: Aichi M6A1 Seiran - Japan's Submarine Launched Panama Canal Bomber" includes the following features: 1) Approximately 64 black and white photographs; 2) 12 color photographs; 3) 1 Aichi M6A1 Seiran color illustration; 4) 1 three-view black and white illustration showing the "Folding method of Seiran for submersible stowage"; 5) 1 three-view Aichi M6A1 Seiran black and white illustration; 6) 1 black and white side aircraft profile illustration of Seiran in the catapult launch position; 7) 1 three-view Aichi M6A-1-K Nanzan black and white illustration and 8) 1 map.  This book is 32 pages and is in excellent condition.  The author is Robert C. Mikesh.  Edition published in 1975.
