The book "Nautilus" tells the fascinating story of the submarine, a vessel which revolutionized naval warfare during the twentieth century and the men who designed and worked on them. In their relatively short history submarines and submersible vessels have played a decisive role in two world wars and currently they roam the oceans armed with nuclear missiles ready to surface anywhere and strike any target. The book begins with the dramatic story of how Russian scientests and naval personnel set about the task of constructing a nuclear submarine from scratch. The story then takes a retrospective look at the early submariner's and developments up to World War I. The fortunes of an American, British and German submarine are each followed during the course of World War II. The operations and strategies behind the activities of these three submarines are brought vividly to life through many eye-witness accounts from the men who fought and worked on the boats. A final chapter tells the story of the post World War II rivalry between the United States and the U.S.S.R., as well as the powerful influence of the American Admiral Rickover who dominated the American nuclear submarine program for nearly forty years. This book also explores the story of the non-military men who took the first tentative steps into the deepest regions of the oceans.
