The book, Navies Of World War 3, represents a comprehensive review of the naval assets deployed around the world by NATO and the former Soviet Union during the early 1980s. The nature of maritime warfare has been completely transformed since the end of World War II. During the "Cold War" era, the former Soviet Union had managed to deploy powerful task forces in every ocean of the World. During the post Vietnam War era on the other hand, the United States and its NATO Navies suffered from financial restrictions and from those who felt that the value of deploying navies around the globe had come and gone. Fortunately, American interventions in the Middle East and in the Caribbean during the early 1980s along with the British success experience during the 1982 Falklands War led to the realization that the West's superiority in terms of quality and quantity over the former Soviet Union's navy was quickly slipping away. This in turn led to concerted efforts, especially in the United States, to switch direction and to eventually work towards establishing a 600-ship fleet. Advances in technology during the 1970s and 1980s were just as significant as strategic developments. By the 1980s, ballistic submarines could destroy dozens of targets over the horizon while new generations of cruise missiles gave similar firepower to surface fleets. Meanwhile, developments in electronic sensors and computer-guided weaponry led to the production of ever more sophisticated defensive and offensive weapons. The only conclusion that could be drawn as of the publication of "Navies Of World War 3" was that any future conflict between NATO and the Warsaw pact countries would necessarily include major naval engagements around the world. The major sections of this book include the following: 1) Naval Power And Technology; 2) Strategic Weapons; 3) Underwater Warfare; 4) Surface Combat; 5) Air Defense; 6) Anti-Submarine Operations; 7) Mines And Minesweepers; 8) Amphibious Warfare; 9) Prospects For The Future and 10) Index.
