The book, Ninth Air Force Story, chronicles the history of the Ninth Air Force highlighting the aircraft used, the units formed and the bombing missions flown by this American air force during World War II.  The Ninth Air Force was established on September 11, 1941 originally as the 5th Air Support Command at Bowman Field, Kentucky, USA.  On April 8, 1942 this organization was re-designated as the Ninth Air Force and began its combat operations later in the year initially in the Western Desert Campaign in North Africa.  The Ninth Air Force was reassigned to England in 1943 where it began operations carrying out tactical bombing missions against Axis targets in France, the Low Countries and Germany in support of Allied ground forces.  It continued to carry out tactical bombing missions along with engaging in air-to-air combat against enemy aircraft until Germany's surrender on May 8, 1945.  The various bomber and fighter aircraft flown in the Ninth Air Force during World War II included the Consolidated B-24 heavy bomber, Martin B-26 Marauder medium bomber, North American B-25 Mitchell medium bomber and Republic P-47 Thunderbolt fighter-bomber to name a few.  In telling the "Ninth Air Force Story" every effort was made to relate the Ninth's assignments and accomplishments within the context of the broader war picture, in North Africa and in Western Europe.  Also covered in detail is the background for the many units that came to it along with their exploits as told through the first-hand accounts of the individuals that took part.  The major sections of the "Ninth Air Force Story" are as follows: 1) Ninth Air Force History; 2) U.S. Advanced Landing Grounds In Western Europe As Of V.E. Day; 3) Ninth Air Force Markings (Desert, Fighter, Bomber & Other Units) and 4) Ninth Air Force Aces.  In addition to an informative narrative, the "Ninth Air Force Story" includes the following features: 1) Approximately 107 black and white vintage photographs; 2) About 15 black and white illustrations; 3) 16 black and white aircraft profiles including camouflage & unit markings and 4) 1 map.  This book is 64 pages and is in excellent condition.  The author is Kenn C. Rust.  Edition published in 1982.
