The North American P-51 D Mustang was without a doubt one of the greatest fighter aircraft flown by either the Axis or Allied Air Forces during World War II. It proved to be a powerful and versatile fighter that had the range to fly long-distance escort missions protecting American heavy four engine B-17 Flying Fortress and B-24 Liberator bombers. Ironically, the P-51 was originally designed to meet a British Procurement Office specification for a high performance, single engine aircraft. North American Aviation designed and built the prototype P-51 in a relatively short period of time. The initial deliveries of the P-51 Mustang to the Royal Air Force (RAF) began in October 1941 and deliveries continued throughout World War II. The United States Army Air Corps recognized the potential of the P-51 and soon placed orders for the aircraft as well. The definitive P-51 Mustang variant was the "D" model of which 7,956 units were delivered. The P-51 D Mustang was powered by a 1,590 horsepower Packard V-1650-7 engine, which was a licensed built version of the of the highly successful British Rolls Royce Merlin engine. The operational characteristics of the P-51 D Mustang included the following: 1) Top speed of 437 mph and 2) Combat radius of 1,300 miles. The P-51 D Mustang was armed with six .50 caliber machine guns and could carry externally mounted fuel drop tanks and bombs. This older North American P-51 D Mustang scaled model was produced by Kiko in Brazil and includes the following features: 1) Authentic markings for the "Carolina Moon", "Red Eraser" & Buckeye Blitz - VI as flown by the United States Army Air Corps and United State Air Force; 2) Clear two piece canopy; 3) Detailed cockpit; 4) Detailed engine; 5) Detailed landing gear; 6) Molded in silver-gray colored plastic; 7) Moving Propeller; 8) Recessed panel lines; 9) Removable engine cowling; 10) Rivet detail; 11) Seated pilot figure; 12) Sliding canopy; 13) Painting guide and 14) Illustrated assembly instructions.
