The book, Offenhauser: The Legendary Racing Engine And The Men Who Built It traces the glorious history of arguably the most renowned American racing engines of all time and in so doing tells the definitive story of the designers, machinists and drivers who have created the Offenhauser legend. "Offenhauser: The Legendary Racing Engine And The Men Who Built It" relates how Fred Offenhauser went to work for design genius Harry Miller in 1913. When this duo were subsequently joined by the extraordinary draftsman Leo Goossen the team was formed that through the early 1930s dominated the market for high-performance race engines. Due to numerous ill-conceived projects on the part of Harry Miller, however, America's greatest race engine builder went bankrupt. While Harry Miller exited the team at this point, Goossen and Offenhauser were there to pick-up the pieces. This pair built on early successes of their original, powerful four-cylinder to create a circle-track racing dynasty. At the height of its powers in the 1950s, entire fields of Indy drivers were racing cars powered by Offenhauser engines. While the rear-engine revolution of the mid 1960s and the entry of Ford Motor Company and other companies temporarily knocked Offenhauser from their throne, they soon came roaring back with turbo-charging, which allowed them to recapture the position of leading racecar engine manufacturer. This position held until the early 1980s when engines built by other companies caused the Offenhauser engine equipped racecars to become uncompetitive. The author points out that in the end, the Offenhauser was more a victim of the rules book than any fundamental engineering shortcoming.
