 The book, Opel: The Company, The Cars, The People, tells the story of how the mechanical fitter Adam Opel, his wife Sophie and their five sons started Opel and grew it to be one of the most successful automobile manufacturers in Europe.  This book also reveals why the family eventually sold out to General Motors in 1929 and how an Opel model became a "Moskvitch".  The Opel Company, located in Russelsheim, began producing and selling sewing machines in 1862.  By 1886, Opel was producing bicycles and in 1889 began manufacturing automobiles.  After being sold to General Motors in 1929 and subsequently surviving the chaos and destruction of World War II, Opel AG went on to become an international brand with a range of models including the "Kapitan", "Kadet" and "GT".  By the mid 1990s, Opel AG was producing the more modern "Omega", "Astra" and "Tigra" models.  The major sections of this book include the following: 1) A dynasty founded on the bicycle; 2) The search for new markets; 3) On the right track at last; 4) The "Doctor's Car" and volume production; 5) The war changes everything; 6) Bicycles and assembly lines; 7) New people take charge in Ruesselsheim; 8) Crisis, success and destruction; 9) The end that was a new beginning; 10) Full-width bodies and mass production; 11) New styling restraint; 12) The demand for vitality; 13) Through the '70s with the "Manta"; 14) Sport and the way to a new image; 15) New concepts for the '80s and 16) New cars, new markets, new opportunities.  In addition to an informative narrative, "Opel: The Company, The Cars, The People" includes the following features: 1) Approximately 139 black and white photographs; 2) About 155 color photographs; 3) Approximately 7 black and white illustrations and 4) 2 color illustrations.  This book is 176 pages and is in excellent condition.  The author is Jurgen Lewardowski.  Edition published in 1995.
