The story of the Lockheed P-38 F Lightning “Glacier Girl” actually begins with six P-38s and two Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress’ that in the summer of 1942 were on a multi-staged flight as part of Operation Bolero from the United States to forward bases in England.  After taking off from Greenland on the next leg of their journey, these aircraft ran into a massive storm that forced them to reverse course back to Greenland.  Unfortunately for this group of 25 American aviators, Greenland was also socked-in with poor weather.  With the P-38s and B-17s running low on fuel, these aircraft descended in a desperate attempt to find a place to land.  They soon saw an open flat area of frozen glacial wasteland to land on.  One by one the P-38s landed on the ice.  While the first P-38 attempted a landing with its gear down, which resulted in it flipping over, all the remaining aircraft made “wheels-up” landings.  The American Aviators were stranded ten miles south of the Artic Circle but after eleven days were rescued by United States Army weather station personnel located at Angmagssalik, Greenland.  The warplanes were abandoned on the glacier and after the first subsequent winter disappeared from sight.  During the years following, no fewer than 13 missions were launch in an attempt to recover the lost aircraft.  After a number of disappointing attempts, the aircraft were finally pinpointed some 268 feet below the service.  On August 1, 1992 after four months of grueling work, a recovery team managed to surface an intact P-38 F Lightning that had crash-landed in 1942 with 1st Lt. Brad McManus at the controls.  The salvage team had chosen this aircraft in large part because it appeared to be the least damaged.  This P-38 F was subsequently restored over a ten-year period and proudly named “Glacier Girl”.  This P-38 F Lightning “Glacier Girl” scaled model includes the following features: 1) Authentic markings for a United States Army Air Force P-38 F Lightning as flown by 1st Lt. Brad McManus in the summer of 1942; 2) Clear multi-piece plastic Canopy; 3) Detailed cockpit; 4) Detailed landing gear; 5) Drop tanks; 6) Molded in gray colored plastic; 7) Missiles; 8) Recessed panel lines; 9) Rubber tires; 10) Spinning propellers; 11) Painting guide and 12) Illustrated assembly instructions.  The box is in new condition.  Never started and 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions inventoried.
