The XP-38 Lightning was designed by Clarence L. Kelly and first flew on January 27, 1939. While preceeded by the P-38 E, the F variant was the first mass produced version of the Lightning to see extensive combat use. The G variant used the more powerful Allison F-10 engines rate at 1,140 h.p. each. This variant began to see large scale action in North Africa and the Pacific by late 1942. In addition to its machine guns, this variant could carry up to 4,000 pounds of bombs or drop tanks on external hard points. Approximately 1,100 copies of this variant were produced. The H variant used even more powerful F-15 engines rate at 1,240 h.p. each and was equipped with the first fully automatic supercharger and oil cooler controls for its larger radiators. Approximately 600 of the H variant were produced and they saw service on all fronts beginning in 1943. The maximum speed for the later P-38 variants was approximately 395 m.p.h. and they could effectively fight at an altitudes of up to 25,000 feet above sea level.
