The P-38 Lockheed Lightning was developed in the late 1930s and was the U.S. Army Air Corps' first twin engine, single seat fighter plane. The P-38 was also the first American fighter with twin turbosupercharged engines and a twin boom configuration. This highly detailed kit is a scaled representation of the L variant but includes extra parts to permit the modeller to build one of three other versions in which this famous fighter was produced. In addition to the P-38 L, the following three variants can be assembled from parts in this kit: 1) P-38 M Night Fighter with "Piggy Back" cockpit, radome, interior radar equipment cannon and guns; 2) P-38 J with one-piece clear bomabardier nose section and figure fit with two drop tanks and 3) F-5 photo reconnaissance aircraft with three-piece nose section and seven clear camera windows. Features included in this kit which is molded in three colors are as follows: 1) Door in nose opens to show machine gun and 20 mm cannon; 2) Landing gear may be assembled in flying or landing position; 3) Cockpit canopy opens or closes; 4) Pilot entrance ladder retracts; 5) External armament including rockets, bombs and drop tanks and 6) Pilot and radar operator figures. Also included in this model package are the following: 1) One engine from Gremlin models; 2) One package of Lockheed P-38 decals from Koster Aero Enterprises and 3) One P-38 J / L Lightning detail set. Note: while the model box is original, it is in rough condition. Never started. With the exception of two missing rockets the kit is 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions inventoried.
