The Republic P-47 "Thunderbolt" made a significant contribution to the outcome of World War II after overcoming initial "teething" problems and critics who complained that it was to big to operate and service. The "Jug" as it became to be called was made famous by the following leading American European combat theater aces: 1) Lt. Col. F.S. Gabreski (31 victories); 2) Cpt. R.S. Johnson (21 victories) and 3) Col. H. Zemke (20 victories). The P-47 D was heavily armed with eight .50 caliber machine guns and could carry up to 1,500 l.b.s of bombs. By 1943, with the use of external fuel drop tanks, this big radial fighter was capable of even escorting American bombers to Berlin. This older, out-of-production P-47 D "Thunderbolt" kit comes with authentic markings for the following three aircraft: 1) 69th Fighter Squadron, 58th Fighter Group, 5th Air Force, Saidor, New Guinea; 2) 82nd Fighter Squadron, 78th Fighter Group, 8th Air Force, Duxford, United Kingdom and 3) 62 Fighter Squadron, 58th Fighter Group, U.S.A.A.F., United Kingdom, 1944. Also included with this model are the following: 1) An external fuel tank; 2) A color paint guide and 3) Illustrated assembly instructions. The box is in excellent condition.
