The PBY-5 was considered the most successful flying boat used during World War II.  Designed as a long range patrol bomber, the “Catalina” served the Allies well, making the discovery of the German dreadnaught Bismarck that ultimately led to the destruction of that super battleship.  Feared too by enemy U-boat captains, the PBY patrol ships sank many Axis submarines.  Another mission the sturdy PBY Catalina’s excelled in was the rescue of downed pilots.  After the war, the PBY-5 was used by the Coast Guard in air-sea rescue operations, coming to the aid of stricken vessels and by commercial carriers that found it an ideal aircraft to operate in remote locations.  This older PBY-5 Catalina Flying Boat scaled model dates from 1971 and includes the following features: 1) Authentic markings for a PBY-5 as operated by the United States Coast Guard; 2) Beaching gear for land operations; 3) Clear plastic cockpit and turret canopies; 4) Detailed engines; 5) Movable propellers; 6) Recessed panel lines; 7) Retractable wingtip floats; 8) Painting guide and 9) Illustrated assembly instructions.  The box is in excellent condition.  Never started and factory sealed.
