The book, Pacific Sweep reviews the operational history of the United States Army Air Force’s 5th and 13th Fighter Commands in World War II. The history of these storied fighter commands began in tragedy with a handful of pilots flying mostly older aircraft types desperately trying to stop the Japanese onslaught in the Philippines in late 1941 and early 1942. With the fall of the Philippines, the surviving aircraft and pilots were moved to Australia where they continued their struggle against tremendous odds by defending this continent and New Guinea. Always the poor stepchild to air activities against Nazi Germany, the 5th and 13th Fighter Commands fought with what they had. What they lacked in aircraft, personnel and comforts they made up for in ingenuity, skill and courage. The book, “Pacific Sweep” draws heavily on official records and the personal diaries of those pilots and support personnel who were there. The 5th and 13th Fighter Command fought a deadly series of battles over vast stretches of oceans and for possession of little known islands. Flying Lockheed P-38 Lightnings, Curtiss P-40 Warhawks and Republic P-47 Thunderbolts these air units helped to stop the advance of Japanese forces and over time gradually seized the initiative pushing the enemy back towards Japan. The major sections of “Pacific Sweep” are as follows: 1) Introduction; 2) Chapter I – The Philippines; 3) Chapter II – Java; 4) Chapter III – Defense Of Australia And New Guinea; 5) Chapter IV – Guadalcanal; 6) Chapter V – The Central Solomons; 7) Chapter VI – The Papuan Campaign; 8) Chapter VII – Holding The Line – New Guinea; 9) Chapter VIII – Lae And Finschhafen; 10) Chapter IX – Bougainville And The Reduction Of Rabaul; 11) Chapter X – The Admiralties And Hollandia; 12) Chapter XI – Wrapup In New Guinea; 13) Chapter XII – Leyte; 14) Chapter XIII – Mindoro And Luzon; 15) Chapter XIV – Formosa, Indochina, And North To Victory; 16) Appendix I – U.S. Army Air Force Fighter Aces Of The South And Southwest Pacific; 17) Appendix II – Victories Of Major Richard I. Bong; 18) Appendix III – Victories Of Major Thomas B. McGuire, Jr.; 19) Appendix IV – Flying The P-38 In Combat: Captain W.K. Giroux and 20) Appendix V – Flying The P-40 In Combat: Captain Robert M. DeHaven. In addition to an informative narrative, “Pacific Sweep” includes approximately 72 black and white photographs many of which were taken by the veteran pilots themselves.
