Following the defeat of France and the shift of major land operations to North Africa, both the PzKw III and PzKw IV appeared in the Libyan and Egyptian deserts. When the British and French forces fighting in North Africa were on the verge of routing the Italian Army in North Africa, Rome looked to Berlin for assistance. The German's aid took the form of the legendary Africa Corps which soon to be commanded by Field Marshall Erwin Rommel. A nucleus of what was to become one of the most famous fighting units in World War II arrived on the North African front in early 1941. The Africa Corps operated the PZKw III-M medium tank had the same modifications as the Model L plus the addition of three smoke dischargers on each side of the turret. Some were also fitted with an armored skirt (Schurzen) while a handful of vehicles had "Eastern Front" tracks which enabled "grousers" to be fitted for soft, muddy terrain. Side doors and pistol ports were eliminated from this model. The PZKw weighed 22 tons and had a 50 mm cannon as the main offensive battery along with secondary armament of two MG-34 machine guns.
