The PE-2 was a World War II era Russian twin-engine fighter-bomber designed by Vladimir Petlyakov. When the PE-2 was introduced in 1941, it was one of the fastest aircraft operating on the Russian front. The PE-2's speed, together with its range and ability to carry a heavy payload made it suitable for many different combat roles. While the PE-2 was designed as a medium to low-level dive-bomber, its versatility allowed it to be also be used in the level bombing, ground attack, reconnaissance and fighter roles. Post war surplus PE-2s were then operated by a number of Warsaw Pact countries first for operational duties and then later for aircrew training. The PE-2s were powered by two 1,100 horsepower engines which gave it a maximum speed of 335 m.p.h. and a combat range of 1,000 miles. The PE-2 could carry a bomb load of 2,200 pounds and had defensive armament of one 7.62 and two 12.7 mm machine guns. This older, out-of-production Petlyakov PE-2 includes the following features: 1) Authentic markings for either a PE-2 as flown by the Russian or Czechoslovakian Air Forces; 2) Clear multi-piece plastic canopy; 3) Clear plastic stand; 4) Detailed cockpit; 5) Detailed landing gear; 6) Gunner, observer and pilot figures; 7) Molded in light blue colored plastic; 8) Recessed panel lines and 9) Illustrated assembly instructions.
