The RWD-5 bis was a single engine, two seat, high-wing monoplane light aircraft designed and built in Poland during the 1930s. It was used primarily as a sports and training aircraft by the Polish Aero Club. Production of the RWD-5 began in 1931 and by the time it wrapped-up in 1937 a total of approximately 20 aircraft of all variants had been produced. In 1933, a one-off RWD-5 bis single seat variant with additional onboard fuel capacity was built in order to be used in a number of long distance flight record attempts. The RWD-5 bis was forever made famous when it was flown successfully across the Atlantic Ocean from Senegal in West Africa to Maceio in Brazil. The RWD-5 bis set a flight distance record at the time in the FAI light tourist plane class. After this historic flight the RWD-5 bis was disassembled and shipped back to Europe on a ship. The operational characteristics are as follows: 1) Top speed of just over 125 m.p.h.; 2) Range of just under 700 miles and 3) Service ceiling of approximately 15,000 feet. This older, out-of-production RWD-5 bis model from Poland is molded in light green plastic and includes the following features: 1) Authentic markings for two different aircraft; 2) Can be built as either the RWD-5 or RWD-5 bis variants; 3) Clear plastic cockpit glass areas; 4) Simulated fabric covering; 5) Painting guide for two different aircraft and 6) Illustrated assembly instructions. This RWD-5 bis model is not widely available and represents an interesting aircraft that was produced in very limited numbers. The box is in excellent condition. Never started and 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions inventoried.
