The book, Rails East To Promontory - The Utah Stations, presents a history and description of a portion of the first transcontinental railroad completed on May 10, 1869 and owned by the Central Pacific Railroad Company. A substantial portion of this stretch of track in Utah is now abandoned. The original grade heading east out of Nevada and skirted the northern boundary of the Great Salt Lake was eventually abandoned in favor of a more direct route between Lucin and Ogden, Utah via trestle over the large body of water. The original section, which is the subject of this book, was used only occasionally until 1904 and then was removed entirely in 1942. This book provides a documentary and historical perspective to the abandoned grade, its railroad stations and associated features spanning from Lucin eastward to the Golden Spike National Historic Site at Promontory Summit. This book is divided up into three broad parts with the first focused providing a historical sketch of the building, maintenance and abandonment of the route now known as the "Promontory Branch". Next, this book provides a history and description of the railroad structures and settlements along the abandoned route. Finally, this book wraps-up with a brief review of the artifacts encountered along the route as of 1981. This book's Table of Contents is laid out as follows: 1) Abstract; 2) Acknowledgements; 3) Introduction; 4) Historical Sketch; 5) The Promontory Branch Stations (25 in number); 6) Visual Features and Facilities Today; 7) Concluding Statement; 8) Appendix I; 9) Appendix II and 10) Bibliography. "Rails East To Promontory - The Utah Stations" is sure to be of interest to archaeologists, historians and land managers requiring a basic study from which further archival research may be pursued. In addition to an informative narrative, this book includes the following features: 1) Approximately 86 black and white vintage photographs; 2) About 20 black and white illustrations and 3) 19 maps.
