It has been referred to as "the greatest naval battle since Trafalgar" and on June 4, 1942, near a tiny island 1,500 miles from Hawaii the course of World War II in the Pacific Ocean changed forever.  Prior to the Battle of Midway, the Japanese armed forces were rampaging in a seemingly unstoppable fashion across the vast expanses of the Pacific Ocean.  With the Japanese Navy's loss of four large aircraft carriers during the Battle of Midway, the Japanese military machine lost momentum.  While the war would go on for three long years the high tide of Japanese military conquest had been reached and the momentum shifted inexorably to the United States and the Allied armed forces.  The book, Return To Midway, revisits the scenes of this epic naval battle and tells the vivid story of how the mighty Japanese Navy was stopped dead in its tracks.  Fifty-six years later, the legendary underwater explorer, Robert Ballard embarked on a search for the lost carriers that had been sunk during this battle.  Aside from searching for the Yorktown which was the only United States Navy carrier lost, Robert Ballard's team was searching for the underwater graves of the four large Japanese carriers lost as well.  Accompanying him were a group of American and Japanese veterans who once faced each other as enemies.  The historic context of this great battle served as fitting backdrop to the high-tech hunt for this great sunken battlefield.  Dr. Ballard's search area was enormous and the depth of the wrecks was over 15,000 feet below the surface of the Pacific Ocean.  As time was running out and after repeated equipment failures, the remains of the U.S.S. Yorktown was finally discovered on May 19, 1998.  The major sections of this modern-day adventure story are as follows: 1) Field of Battle; 2) The Forces Gather; 3) Primary Target; 4) The Fourth of June; 5) Searching for Ghosts; 6) Yorktown's Farewell; 7) Three Miles Down; 8) The Yorktown Today and 9) Leaving Midway.  In addition to an informative narrative, "Return To Midway" includes the following features: 1) Approximately 98 black and white vintage photographs; 2) About 83 color photographs; 3) About 28 color illustrations and 4) 11 maps.  This book is 191 pages and is in excellent condition.  The authors are Robert D. Ballard and Rick Archbold.  Edition published in 1999.
