The book, Richmond Battlefields, a National Battlefield Park, tells the story of both the The Peninsula Campaign launched by Union forces under General George B. McCellan from southwest of the Confederate capital from March to July, 1862 and the final defensive struggle the Confederate forces fought under General Robert E. Lee  against the Union Army in in the 1864 to 1865.  Once a decision was made by the new Confederate Government in May, 1861 to move the capital for the Confederate States of America from Montgomery, Alabama to Richmond Virginia it was inevitable that it would be a major battlefront throughout the remainder of the American Civil War.  While the Peninsula Campaign was initially quite successful for the Union forces lead by General McClellan, eventually the defensive posturing of the Confederate forces lead by General Joseph E. Johnston and later General Robert. E. Lee brought the Union's march to Richmond to a halt on the outskirts of the South's capital.  After an aggressive Confederate counter-attack lead by General Joseph E. Johnston and known as the Battle of Seven Pines took place, General McClellan withdrew and evacuated the Union's forces from the peninsula.  The battles that took place during the 1864 to 1865 timeframe in and around Richmond forced the Confederate forces into primarily a defensive posture.  Battles fought around Richmond late in the war included Cold Harbor and Fort Harrison.  Eventually with the Confederate forces exhausted and dwindling in number the inevitable occurred and the Confederate capital fell to a far superior number of Union soldiers lead by General Ulysses S. Grant.  The major sections of "Richmond Battlefields" are as follows: 1) Richmond; 2) The Army of the Potomac; 3) Part I - The Peninsula Campaign, Summer 1862; 4) Part Two - The Final Struggle For Richmond, 1864-65; 5) The Park and 6) Administration.  The sections included in Part I are as follows: 1) On to Richmond; 2) Up the Peninsula; 3) Drewry's Bluff; 4) Seven Pines (Fair Oaks); 5) Lee Takes Command; 6) The Seven Days Begins; 7) Beaver Dam Creek (Ellerson's Mill); 8) Gaines' Mill; 9) Savage Station; 10) Glendale (Frayser's Farm); 11) Malvern Hill; 12) End of Campaign and 13) The Years Between.  Part II of "Richmond Battlefields" includes the following sections: 1) Lincoln's New Commander; 2) Cold Harbor; 3) Fort Harrison and 4) Richmond Falls.  In addition to an informative narrative, "Richmond Battlefields" includes the following features: 1) Approximately 9 black and white photographs; 2) About 20 black and white illustrations and 3) Approximately 9 maps.  This book is 46 pages and is in very good condition.  The author is Joseph P. Cullen.  Edition published in 1961.
