The movie title accurately describes the often lethal mission of the submariner in WW II. The movie focuses on a test of wills between Commander Richardson (Clark Cable) and Lt. Bledsoe (Burt Lancaster) as they undertake a daring mission to waters off the home islands of Japan. Richardson is the only survivor of an earlier mission to the Bungo Straights and is determined in this mission to avoid his previous fate of being sunk by a notorious Japanese Destroyer named Bongo Pete. When Richardson disobeys navy orders to stay clear of the Bongo Straights and instead seeks out to sink his nemisi Bongo Pete the crew come close to rebellion in favor of Lt. Bledsoe who has the trust of the crew. Starring Clark Gable, Burt Lancaster and Don Rickles among others. Widescreen in BW. Runtime 93 minutes.
