The book, S.E.5a In Action (# 69) represents an accurate and concise pictorial study of one of the best British biplane fighters to see combat during World War I. While this single seat, single engine fighter initially had teething problems, particularly with its motor, by 1918 most of the major problems had been fixed and it began to assist the Allies in regaining air superiority over the Western European battlefront. The S.E.5a was powered by a 200 horsepower Hispano-Suiza V-8 engine, which gave it the following operational characteristics: 1) Top speed of 126 mph; 2) Endurance of 2.5 hours and 3) Service ceiling of 17,000 feet. The S.E.5a was armed with one .303 caliber forward-firing Vickers machine gun and one .303 caliber Lewis machine gun mounted on the upper wing. The S.E.5a could also carry an offensive bomb-load of four 25-pound bombs over short distances. The major sections of “S.E.5a In Action (# 69)” are as follows: 1) Acknowledgements; 2) Dedication; 3) Introduction; 4) S.E. 5; 5) S.E. 5a; 6) Engine And Structural Problems; 7) The S.E. 5a In Combat; 8) Camouflage And Markings; 9) S.E. 5b; 10) Two-Seat Trainers; 11) Post War and 12) Survivors. In addition to an informative narrative, “S.E.5a In Action (# 69)” includes the following features: 1) Approximately 105 black and white photographs; 2) About 52 black and white illustrations; 3) 10 color side aircraft profile illustrations; 4) 1 S.E. 5 three-view black and white illustration with specifications; 5) 1 S.E. 5a three-view black and white illustration with specifications and 6) 3 color cover paintings.
