The movie, Shenandoah, centers on a principled Virginia farmer who tries to keep his family safe from the tumult of the Civil War by withdrawing into pacifism and isolation. Although strongly opposed to slavery, his reluctance to take up arms keeps him from joining forces with Union soldiers. The farmer manages to avoid the Civil War until his youngest son is kidnapped by Northern soldiers and he is finally pulled into the bloody conflict.
