The book, Smart Weapons, represents the first fully illustrated history of the airborne weapons systems of tomorrow, including previously unseen photographs and accounts of their deployment. While it may surprise some that unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been around since World War I, the capabilities of UAVs deployed up through the end of the 20th century are so cutting edge that their capabilities are almost unbelievable. "Smart Weapons" chronicles little-known developments by N.A.S.A. and the United States Department of Defense and includes information about the following projects: 1) HiMAT miniature jet fighter and X-36; 2) Dark Star and Global Hawk and 3) Predator. This book also takes a look at the following future developments that were being considered in the late 1990s: 1) Dragonfly-sized UAVs that seek out specific targets; 2) Fighters that operate autonomously and 3) Patrol reconnaissance aircraft that can fly for weeks in the upper atmosphere. Finally, the projected battlefields of the 21st century where "robot UAVs" will do battle against each other is reviewed. The major sections of "Smart Weapons" are as follows: 1) Foreword by Rear Admiral Barton D. Strong; 2) Introduction by Major General Kenneth Israel; 3) Early History; 4) A Time of Exploration; 5) Pioneer UAVs; 6) The Tier Projects; 7) Fact Files; 8) Internet Sites; 9) Index and Abbreviations and 10) Acknowledgements. In addition to an informative narrative, "Smart Weapons" includes the following features: 1) Approximately 48 black and white vintage photographs; 2) About 118 color photographs; 3) 8 black and white illustrations; 4) 12 color illustrations and 5) 2 maps. This book is 208 pages and is in good condition. The authors are Hugh McDaid and David Oliver. Edition published in 1997.
