The book, Soldiers: A History Of Men In Battle, explores the ways in which warriors became soldiers and how that process has the shaped the very world we live in today.  The central focus of this book is on the exact nature of the battlefield experience whether it be from the prespective of aircrew, commander, cavalry, gunner, irregular,  infantryman, sapper or tankman.  The book also does a comprehensive job of articulating how warfare and the soldiers role has change over the centuries from the earliest warrior types that walked and used primitive weapons, followed by cavalry and artillery.  The primacy of the infantryman declined in the late 18th century and ultimately fell by the mid 19th century as rifles furnished with magazines followed by the earliest "machine guns" took hold.  By the 20th century, motorized infantry, self-propelled artillery, tactical aircraft and tanks gave military operations the speed and reach not seen since the raids of the legendary warrior Genghis Kahn.  World war II lead to the rise of irregular forces such as commandos, guerrillas, long range penetration teams, parachustists and subversive teams which would become the norm in many post-war conflicts around the world.  The authors point out that mechanized warfare, including the use of aerial bombing, also opened the door to many more civilian casualties than warfare in previous centuries.  In gaining a better understanding of modern warfare and the terrible human toll taken in most conflicts, the authors explore the vital role of an army's medical service in saving lives.  Finally, the role of leadership on building a soldiers fighting spirit is reviewed in detail.  The major sections of this book are as follows: 1) Foreward; 2) Acknowledgements; 3) Introduction; 4) The Face of Battle; 5) Fighting Spirit; 6) Infantry; 7) Cavalry; 8) Gunner; 9) Tank; 10) Casualty; 11) Sapper; 12) Air Power; 13) Commander; 14) Sinews of War; 15) Irregular; 16) Experience of War; 17) Conclusion and 18) Index.  In addition to a very informative narrative, this book includes the following features: 1) Approximately 115 black and white vintage photographs; 2) 11 color photographs; 3) About 19 black and white illustrations and 4) Approximately 26 color illustrations.  This book is 288 pages and is in good condition.  The authors are John Keegan, Richard Holmes and John Gau with Frederick Forsyth (foreward).  Edition published in 1986.
