The movie, Soylent Green, is a science fiction horror story about what life would be in a over-populated future where every commodity including food and water are scarce. The year is 2022 and the setting is New York City where the population has grown to 40 million people. It is a future where voluntary death is encouraged by government sponsored clinics . The environmental erosion is so complete that people must rely on a "wafer-like" green chip called Soylent Green. Against this backdrop, the lead character who is a police detective, is called in to investigate the murder of a wealthy citizen. As the investigation proceeds, the detective finds out that the murder victim is also a board member of the corporation that produces Soylent Green. The detective eventually sneaks in to the factory making the Soylent Green and discovers the hideous truth that this food includes a "secret ingredient" to horrible to contemplate. This provocative film is a "nightmarish" vision of what the future could be if steps are not taken to curb overcrowding and the contamination of the environment. Starring Charlton Heston, Leigh Taylor-Young and Edward G. Robinson among others. Full screen in color. Released in 1973. Runtime 97 minutes.
