While the Supermarine Spitfire Mk 1 had proven itself during the Battle Of Britain in 1940 as a worthy adversary of anything the Luftwaffe could field, by 1941 it was clear it needed to evolve to keep up with the continunig German fighter aircraft development. Supermarine addressed the topic of improving the Spitfire by introducing two parallel development paths. The first track focused on incremental design changes that would not require time-consuming production reorganization. The second path represented a more involved program of airframe strengthening and refinement which would take longer and require fundamental changes in the construction effort. The first approach led to the interim Mks VA and VB while the latter effort eventually led to the Mk VC, Mk VII, Mk VIII, Mk IX, Mk XIV and the 21/22 model. Included in the Book Spitfire: Supermarine Spitfire Mk V are 68 black and white photographs, 3 pages of camouflage and marking illstrations, 1 two page full cutaway drawing, a number of line drawings and 1 color profile. This book is 32 pages and is in very good condition. The author is Ray Rimell with Steve Archibald (color profile), and Tony Barnes (cut away profile and illustrations). Edition published in 1985.
