The famous locomotive “Rocket” was designed and built in 1829 at the works of Robert Stephenson & Company, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, to compete in the Rainhill Trials held in October of the same year. When the Rocket was completed, she was sent by ship from Tyneside to Liverpool. One of the rules of the trials was that each engine, with a load of three times its own weight, was to make ten trips up and down a 1 ¾ mile level section of line at Rainhill and after a pause for refueling, was to make another ten trips over the same distance. On October 8th, 1829, the Rocket carried out the required test and covered the distance at an average speed of 16 miles per hour, and used only half a ton of coke for the whole 70 miles and it was for this performance that the 500 pounds sterling prize was awarded to George Stephenson. This old, out of production Stephenson’s “Rocket” scaled model includes the following features: 1) Detailed undercarriage; 2) Molded in yellow color plastic; 3) Two crew figures; 4) Color painting guide and 5) Illustrated assembly instructions. The package is in Very Good condition. Never started and factory sealed.
