The movie, "Eisenhower", is part of PBS videos' programs from The American Experience series which offers viewers a unique opportunity to explore our nation's history through the stories of people and events that have changed or dramatically shaped who we are today. In this installment, the camera focuses on Dwight D. Eisenhower, an American officer who rose from obscurity in the late 1930s to become supreme commander of Allied forces in Europe during World War II, and who ultimately became a beloved figure to many Americans as President of the United States. As President, Eisenhower balanced the nation's budget, settled the conflict in Korea and ultimately helped to bring an end to Senator Joe McCarthy and his largely made-up "red scare" during his first term in office. During his second term in office, however, President Eisenhower sufferred a heart attack and was criticized for his indecisiveness and his unwillingness to support public school desegregation. To many Americans, President Eisenhower had almost become an "absentee president". The film, The American Experience: Eisenhower, offers the viewer an extensive portrait of a man who played a key role in world events through two of the most crucial decades in this century. Full screen in black and white & color. Released in 1993. Runtime 150 minutes.
