The film, The American Experience: FDR, is part of PBS' series focusing attention on the leaders who have changed America. In this installment, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who was the only individual ever elected four times to be America's highest office, is explored in detail. "FDR" goes beyond the familiar words and images to probe the "indentity" of President Roosevelt with a fresh approach and new research. This documentary includes archival film, home movies, audio clips, newly produced footage of significant landmarks in FDR's life along with interviews with familiy, friends and biographers to round out a more complete picture of one of the greatest Presidents in American History. The picture that emerges is that of a charismatic leader who had the audacity to try to wrest America out of the clutches of the Great Depression, rescued Europe from Adolf Hitler and forever changed America's ideas about the Presidency. Elected to a fourth term in 1944, FDR struggled to maintain a buoyant persona even while he attempted to mask his worsening ill-health. When FDR died on April 12, 1945, Americans reacted with shock to the news of the death of a man who had been the only President many had ever known. Narrated by David McCullough. Full screen in black and white & color. Released in 1994. Runtime 75 minutes.
