The film, The Blimp Goes To War...Again (Airship History Series) reviews the history of the United States Navy Zeppelin Patrol (ZP) squadrons and their lighter-than-air craft from 1937-1945. The story begins with a review of the origins of the K-type airship in 1937 and covers efforts to quickly expand the Navy's lighter-than-air air force in the aftermath of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The scramble to develop and expand anti-submarine equipment following staggering shipping losses by German submarines is documented in detail. As the war progresses, the "helium umbrella" expanded as airships are deployed to far-off bases in Africa, Brazil, Cuba, Jamaica and Trinidad. Aside from documenting the airships themselves, "The Blimp Goes To War...Again (Airship History Series)" covers the massive building program to build large hangers out of wood for servicing this ever expanding fleet of lighter-than-air blimps. Through the use of unpublished Navy action film footage, company films, home movies, official reports and personal snapshots, "The Blimp Goes To War...Again (Airship History Series)" gives the viewer an idea of what it was like to fly a United States Navy blimp during World War II as they attacked German U-boats, escorted convoys, performed daring jungle rescues and developed "cutting-edge" research. "The Blimp Goes To War...Again (Airship History Series)" tells an incredible story that is filled with heartbreaking tragedies, as well as, thrilling victories. Narrated by Joseph Lundy, Jr. (ZP-41). Full screen in black & white and Color. Released in 1997. Runtime 90 minutes.
