The movie, The Bridge At Remagen, is based on a novel by Kenneth William, takes place in March, 1945 and centers on the last remaining intact bridge across the Rhine River.  As the war in Europe is nearly over, the United States and German Army troops converge on "The Bridge At Remagen".  For the Americans the bridge is the last link to the heart of the Third Reich.  If they can blow it up, they will be able to capture vast numbers of German soldiers fighting on the west side of the bridge.  For the German soldiers this bridge represents their last chance to get back to Germany.  As the movie opens German General von Brock assigns the task of destorying the bridge to Major Paul Kreuger.  Both men want to leave the bridge intact as long as possible so that as many German soldiers as possible can escape back to Germany.  They also know that should they not succeed in destroying the bridge both men will likely be shot.  On the American side, Bigadier General Skinner assigns the task of destroying the bridge to Major Barnes, a man that is held in contempt by most of his men.  Major Barnes in turn delegates the task of destorying the bridge to Lieutenant Phil Hartman a reluctant hero and Sergeant Angela a low-life who steals valuables from dead German soldiers.  As the American soldiers race to the bridge, the Germans try to move as many troops to the east side of the bridge before the Americans arive.  The Germans receive the necessary explosives at the last minute just as the Americans reach the city Remagen.  The two forces trade cannon and tank fire as an American B-25 drops bombs on the bridge.  At the last moment possible, the Germans attempt to blow-up the bridge but find the ignition wire has been destroyed.  They then ignite the explosives using a fuse yet the bridge survives.  The Americans are then tasked with capturing the bridge as they realise it could be used to quickly move soldiers into Germany.  Do the Americans succeed?  What happens to Major Kreuger?  The viewer will have to watch this movie to find out how it ends.  Starring George Segal, Robert Vaughn and Ben Gazzara among others.  Full screen in color.  Released in 1969.  Runtime 116 minutes.
