Filmed in the remote jungles and mountains of Ceylon, The Bridge Over The River Kwai is the critically acclaimed movie about British and other Allied P.O.W.s who are forced to build a vital railway bridge for the Japanese in occupied Burma. The plot centers on an escaped American prisoner who is asked to lead a commando mission back to the bridge in order to destroy it before it can be used to move Japanese troops and supplies to the front lines to battle the combined Allied forces. This movie which is based on the Pierre Boulle's novel The Bridge On The River Kwai, cost $3 million to produce and grossed over $30 million in its initial release.
