The book, The Conquistadores (#101), which is part of Osprey Military's "Men-At-Arms" series, documents both the Conquistadores and their formidable enemies in the New World which included the Aztecs, Incas and Mayan native people. In the decades following Columbus' discovery of the New World on October 12, 1492, a myriad of former Spainish soldiers founded colonies in the West Indies. This group of colonizers were an unruly group of individuals who quickly grew restless in the role of passive settler. In order to avoid the continued dull work of administrators and planters, many of these ex-soldiers or Conquistadores began to seek new territoies. Their movement out of the small established colonies into the interior of Central and South America invariably led to conflict with the Native peoples including the Aztecs, Incas and Maya. The Conquistadores search for gold, silver and slaves lead to many savage battles and a ruthlessness that is now become legendary. This book is sure to appeal to anyone interested in 15th and 16th century Spainish and native American history. This book is 40 pages and is in excellent condition. The author is Terence Wise with Angus McBride (color plates). Edition published in 1994.
