The movie, The Flight Of The Eagle tells the remarkable true story of one man's fanciful and probably absurd idea and the consequence of a solitary trek through the forbidden polar night.  On Sunday, July 11 at 1355 hours, the hydrogen-filled balloon The Eagle, lifts off from the Spitzbergen Island group in the Artic Ocean piloted by three Swedish adventurers.  The intrepid explorers include S.A. Andree, Nils Strindberg and Knut Fraenkel.  The purpose of their mission was to reach the North Pole and claim it for the King of Sweden.  After a series of false starts the group finally takes-off only to be forced down on a remote ice flow.  While their exploits and final demise were recorded in their journals, it was not until 1932, when by coincidence the final camp of the explorers is found on White Island.  Most sensational of all was the discovery of undeveloped photographs depicting the stark reality of the doomed Eagle expedition.  "The Flight Of The Eagle" features beautiful photography and tells the story of one of the lesser known attempts to explore the forbidding North Pole.  Starring Max Von Sydow, Sverre Anker Ousdal and Goran Stangertz among others.  Full screen in color.  Released in 1981.  Runtime 115 minutes.
