The movie, The Great Raid, is the true story of an U.S. Army Ranger unit tasked with the mission to rescue American and Filipino P.O.W.s from the Japanese Cabantauan prison camp in the Philippines. Following the 1942 Bataan Death March, thousands of U.S. and Filipino soldiers were imprisoned by the Japanese in a P.O.W. camp in the Philippines. Brutalized, starved and tortured, the prisoners languished in the camp for nearly three years. After the Allied landings in the Phillipines in late 1944 it became known that the Japanese would rather kill their prisoners than turn them over to the advancing Americans. With this in mind, a daring mission was planned in January, 1945 to rescue the prisoners before they could be executed. The mission included a U.S. Army Ranger Battalion and Filipino guerillas in a combined effort to rescue the approximately 500 prisoners still remaining in the camp. To many the rescue attempt seemed nothing short of suicide but to those involved it was a matter of duty and honor to try and make the rescue attempt. This movie was based on two books: 1) The Great Raid: Rescuing The Doomed Ghosts Of Bataan And Corregidor by William B. Breuer and 2) Ghost Soldiers: The Epic Account Of World War II's Greatest Rescue. This is a must-see movie that is thrilling, aggnizing and unforgettable. Starring Benjamin Bratt, James Franco and Robert Mammone among others. Widescreen in color. Release in 2005 Runtime 133 minutes.
